I also spent a week in northwestern Costa Rica on a family vacation, a long weekend in Barbados, a week in Georgia, and two week-plus-long trips to visit relatives in southern California. Number 8 – Brown Pelican. It was a long wait but well worth it and Brown Pelican is an easy addition to my top ten list.

This is one of several families of Western Grebes stayed out in the middle of the lake all day. The first was the presence of 10-12 American White Pelicans. A couple of old Ponderosa Pines, killed in a recent fire, served as a gathering spot for nearly 100 Turkey Vultures. It was good to be back!

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills.

Most websites – particularly those specifically targeting kids – do not mention the fact that juvenile Australian Pelicans have shown cannibalism ( source ). On the plus side, a website of the Australian Government provides a printout for an origami of an Australian Pelican.

I should add that the Big Owls taking over NYC social and even hard print media, dominating conversations with my nonbirder friends and family, are not the only owls in the five boroughs, but like a musical, the closer you are to Broadway, the closer you are to fame and fortune (and maybe even a higher quality rodent for dinner, who knows?). .”
