I therefore decided to counter this month’s heinous wood-warbler attack on my retina by choosing the good old trusty House Sparrow as the topic of my May post.

But I have been sick with different kinds and forms of cold since the beginning of December with no interruption, and so has my entire family. That is very cold for the south of Germany. I still know my audience - this is primarily a blog read by birders in North America, who see the term “squirrel” as little more than a synonym for house sparrow, starling, pest and cholera. Germany, like most of Europe and very much unlike North America, is home to only one species of squirrel.

Of course, with the Drakensberg still not that far away from Capetown and South African explorers obviously very fond of saving mental energy by simply starting bird names with the word “cape”, we have the Cape Robin-Chat … … the Cape Rock Thrush … … the Cape Sparrow … … and the Cape Weaver.

The Black-crowned Night Heron is a member of the heron family. This bird used to be quite common in Germany, but now it is rare. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is another bird that is very common in our compound. Like many other birds, when it feels safe, this species likes to take a bath.

Europe… with such low herp diversity the locals split any sub-population of a species that occurs on either the Iberian Peninsula or Italy as a new species just to make them feel better out themselves, naturally is the continent that rose to the top of my trip list. Either that or having family friends in Germany.
