We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.

Therefore, humans are fish with feet, right? So, here’s the thing. Monkey is a common, not scientific, term.

This young Western Gull seems to have no idea what to make of this Mola Mola (Ocean Sunfish), or perhaps it prefers the company of unusual fish. Many birds display a strong sense of curiousty. Granted, there are a lot of terminally-stupid dogs out there… but you know what I’m saying.

These strange birds are two species in their own family; White-necked or Yellow-headed, endemic to the Upper Guinea forests and Grey-necked or Red-headed, restricted to Lower Guinea forests.
