Alas, Atlanta couldn’t seal the deal in the second half, but Baltimore bullied their way to the Big Game. Falcons are far more numerous throughout the world, so you better start sending your best work in now for the February 14 edition. We’ve got kestrels pretty much covered , but otherwise pour on the falcon flavor!

We were woefully under-prepared in terms of planning – which almost kept us from meeting our friends – but we were also surprised and thrilled to learn that not only were Gray Whales migrating past the lighthouse, but Elephant Seals were lounging on a nearby beach! Elephant Seals. White-crowned Sparrow. Think again!

The roost used to be in front of the “Stadtwerke” (the high chimney with breeding Peregrine Falcons) along Kurfürstenanlage a few hundred metres to the east, but the birds switched to the train station in January 2011. The zoo has a small colony of genuinely wild Grey Herons (watch them compete with the seals for the fish!),

We then took the road to visit Geikie Gorge, which is a short drive from town and a sealed road. We had White-bellied Cuckoo-shrikes and Grey Fantails in the trees and overhead we observed Brown Falcons, Black Kites, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos, Blue-winged Kookaburras, Red-winged Parrots and Cockatiels.

And, for the hornbills above, an old tree hollow: Mama built a sealed nest. The hornbill paragraph, for example explains how the male seals the female into the cavity nest, using mud and droppings, leaving a small hole through which he feeds her. within an old tree’s hollow. Audubon’s Hog Island Audubon Camp attracts birders of all skills levels every summer and Acadia National Park, Monhegan Island, Machias Seal Island, and Scarborough Marsh are nationally known birding hotspots. Some birds are put next to each other to aid in the identification process, for example, falcons follow hawks.
