Snowy Owl vs. Peregrine Falcon

The video above, taken yesterday at New Jersey’s Stone Harbor Point by Tom Johnson , is pretty awesome. In this video, two Peregrine Falcons take turns dive-bombing the owl, which does not like the experience one bit. Peregrine Falcon in flight by Tom Johnson. Can you blame it? It was pretty amazing to watch.

The Gas Station Bird

The concerned person who took the photograph approached a Lukeoil Station in Northvale, New Jersey to inquire about the bird’s well-being, and the owner said dismissively that he could do whatever he liked and had four more birds at home. One might assume this is a falconry bird, but it’s not.

I was reminded of the American Redstart I saw foraging in New Jersey several years ago and hoped that this bird would prove as resilient as I had observed that redstart to be. Several hours after we saw it and reported it to the listserv other birders saw the bird attacked by not one but two Peregrine Falcons.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of September 2011)

The best birds of my weekend were Seahawks, Eagles, Falcons, Cardinals, And Ravens. There was the White Ibis in New Jersey , the Caspian Tern , the Buff-bellied Sandpiper , another White Ibis , this one in New York’s Orange County, a Bald Eagle , and a host of other birds.

The maintenance man declared that his father was a falconer, and that he would take her home so he could care for her. Instead I called my friend Cathy at the famous Raptor Trust in New Jersey, where they have a fully equipped hospital and full-time veterinary technicians on staff. The driver took her to a local nature center.
