The festival headquarters is located on the southwest side of Mission Bay, overlooking a marina with nearby Black-crowned Night Herons and frequently plays host to several falcon species, and a short walk to the San Diego River. As you approach, the combined odor of seabird excrement and sea lions fills the air.

Both falconers and wildlife rehabilitators have to study, gain experience, and jump through various hoops in order to get their licenses. For instance, you can own a lion in Alabama, but not in California. The bird is a captive-bred Peregrine/Gyrfalcon hybrid owned by people with an Exotic Species Permit.

Add the chance of the African animals you’d expect, Elephant , Lion , Leopard and a host of antelope, who’s mouth would not water at the prospect? We will explore the dry savannah for korhaans, bustards, lapwings, Ostrich and smaller birds like waxbills and firefinches and we’ll look for Dickinson’s Kestrel , Lanner and Red-necked Falcons.

Take lions, wolves, hyenas to name a few. But after spending time with experienced falconers in the field I have come to respect and admire the responsible practitioners of this, the sport of kings. It is only due to the strong bond (and association with food) between falconer and raptor that the birds return after a hunt.

How do you find lions in Africa? Yet, we didn’t get far when a smallish falcon flew over the dyke and landed on a log in the mud. Seeing a parked 4×4 and a national park biologist Kostas Papadopoulos scoping the flats… What is he looking at? Lesser White-fronted Geese, of course. Watch for parked 4x4s!
