In the outfield, I was entertained by the mechanical song and flight antics of a choice meadow bird, I can still recall my best friend’s mom telling me, “Patrick, don’t go watching those Bobolinks during the game!” ” During migration, I also see Eastern Wood-Pewees in Costa Rica. The Northern Wetlands.

Even so, he still knew many species and always yearned to learn about the wildlife he encountered. I daresay Fred wanted to do the hike more than we did but being kids before the digital age, we were always game for outdoor adventures. Much more an outdoorsman than a birder, Fred tended to stick to the bigger birds.

I was a bit sad, too, that we had annoyed the owl enough that it felt it had to strafe us … my normal MO is to avoid stressing out wildlife. This spectacular montane vulture reminds me more of a giant falcon as it cleaves the air on long wings. My heart was beating so fast and I was giddy with laughter.
