In the valley of the Yellowstone and Boulder Rivers, snuggled up against Rocky Mountain ranges, sits the little western town of Big Timber, Montana. The highest mountain in Montana, Granite Peak at 12,799 feet, is just south in the Absaroka Mountain Range. All of the neck-strain-free birds below breed in Montana. Ruffed Grouse.

It’s been beautiful here in Montana lately. By beautiful, I mean too cold, too gray, and as always too dry, but full of birds. A little winter discipline and hard work may be just the thing.

Given my west coast experience, I have made dedicated birding trips to several of the more predictable birding hotspots. Although not a birding trip, before we moved from San Francisco to Portland, my wife and I did a long road trip across the United States, covering 12,000 miles and 34 states, from California to Florida to Maine to Montana.

Meanwhile, a birder from Montana who happened to be watching the Magnificent Pirate next to me, was shouting the magic words, “Life Bird!” The birder from Montana and I were calling out bird names to beginning birders as the migrants flew into tall trees surrounding an open area called The Cathedral–“Bay-breasted!

We were visiting Doi Inthanon with Jan and Tu - two of Thailands most extraordinary birders (great people and wonderfully knowledgeable guides) - and as any birding tourist knows: the depths of the birding and peripheral experience is made all the greater by great company.
