Every other year or so, we experience the lightest of frosts, nothing killing, and our warmest temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) occur in late spring. It doesn’t seem to offer food or shelter for birds; but, being the tallest tree on the block, is an important stopover for lots of species. Mostly, we don’t let them.

Lacking the benefit of heated shelters, birds must heed that warning or perish. This is why the Yellow Warblers and Baltimore Orioles of summer don’t linger to experience October 31st, and even late fall migrants like kinglets and sparrows move to slightly warmer regions. It’s delicious to the eye is what it is! JUST SCARY.

Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill. Then we flushed a hidden Diard’s Trogon , a flash of grey and crimson as it took off. A tick is a tick. And wine.

The experience was marvelous — but it also weighed heavily on me. White-headed Woodpecker. It was the first of many that day, and I was totally enamored of their gaudy plumage and beautiful, meadowlark-like songs, often delivered in a kind of hovering display flight above the prairie grasses where they live.
