More Encouragement to Bird at Home

Now, although I have seen this species several times before, we have a unique relationship. My first experience was with a nesting pair, one bird was out at the time and the other was comfortably sitting quite low in the nest. Nothing could move around in the leaf litter without full attention from this Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl.

In the meantime, I have whittled down the number of birds I want to include to 298 species, which is still a bit more than I am supposed to include.

On the Edge.

Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Hopefully a few photographs can help convey the experience. One of the most common species on our trip, the charming, and striking, Black Guillemot. Ringed Seal.

Picathartes – Africa’s strangest birds

They diverged at approximately the same time as the rockjumpers (two quite unique bird species endemic to Southern Africa and now in their own family), and as a result for a while were even placed in the same family. Forest cover in both species’ ranges is being destroyed at an unsustainable rate and these birds’ populations are dwindling.
