Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all. Then a famous local actress, Svetlana Bojkovic, visited the protesters when a loaded lorry arrived, so she took part in stopping it. Photo by Branislav Dencic.

Oostvaardersplassen

10,000 Birds

The Oostvaardersplassen were supposed to be industrial land but by the time the engineers showed up with their shovels the place had transformed into the best wetland in northern Europe. The animals themselves identified as “civilised” and started a hunger strike in protest. It is wild and very beautiful. It was awful.

Canada Reaches Seal Product Deal with China

In order to offset the loss of the seal product market in Europe, Canada has made a deal with China. Although 40 Chinese animal rights groups have protested, they don't really have any political or financial clout to change anything. I'm not surprised. China as a whole still doesn't have a national conscience about these issues.

Activists in Mexico Bomb Max Mara Store

According to a communique received by Bite Back , they did this in protest of Max Mara's use of furs. Max Mara has long been the target of anti-fur activists in Europe and around the world. ALF activists in Polanco Mexico bombed a Max Mara clothing shop. Max Mara is an Italian fashion house. You can read about them here.

In a co-ordinated protest, members of the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) destroyed hundreds of traps and set free the birds inside.
