Winter in Albert Park, Melbourne

Visiting Albert Park in winter recently, all wrapped up in layers of clothing – ethically sourced down is good! The distance around the lake is approximately five kilometres and there are limited places to shelter if a storm approaches fast. Some of the sheltered areas were being used by the Chestnut Teal as a roost.

As I share a home with rescued cats and rabbits, I can't help but think that it's better for them to live their lives cared for and loved than to be put to death in a shelter somewhere due to irresponsible overbreeding, even if they are now confined to the house. It required a bit of an ethical adjustment. It had a little shelter, a box that served as a windbreak and retreat, but this Starling was bold — it kept coming out to stretch its legs and sun itself. Here I was, sitting patiently in a blind, watching a tethered European Starling on a string.
