For example, the Vegetarian News Digest argued that “there is no information that indicates [Hitler] eliminated flesh food for humanitarian reasons.” The bulk of the population has given no reflection at all to the morality of eating meat.

Many essays, especially in the later sections, end with a question, hopefully getting us to think more about questions of ethics, conservation, and the puzzles posed by nature. There is also quite a bit of discipline in these essays; it’s a lot harder to write a very short, personal yet informative piece than to ramble on and on.

" Wild Justice: The Moral Lives of Animals ," By Marc Bekoff and Jessica Pierce, is the most recent (for me) book that debunks myths about the differences between human and nonhuman animals. Also, Bekoff and Pierce present a descriptive view, not a normative view of morality. There are no judgments.

But the tenets of the North American Model were developed in the 19th century, when wildlife ethics and science were a mere glimmer of what we understand today. Effective conservation of wildlife relies upon a well-informed and involved public. A significant part of that transformation is recognizing the substantive blocks to change.

But the ease with which we can tell our stories and post our videos must not render us incapable of moral judgment and decency. And finally, who is to decide when a video is entertaining versus informative? However, it's tough not to cock your head when you read: The internet has given free speech a whole new impetus.
