In " Move to Limit 'Factor Farms' Gains Momentum " in today's New York Times , we learn that farmers in Ohio have agreed to phase out gestation crates within 15 years and veal crates by 2017. This adds another layer to yesterday's discussion about family. Irv Bell's farm is a family farm. It's also a factory farm.

May I recommend a trip to a slaughterhouse?

How does the health of a farmer’s family and community figure in when they are making the decision to continue industrialized production methods? In addition, producing more meat worsens worldwide hunger and food insecurity by dedicating precious farmland and water resources to the production of animal feed.

The new law will cost American family farmers, and ultimately California consumers, hundreds of millions of dollars. The California law adds an arbitrary and unscientific requirement that chickens be prohibited from touching one another or the side of any enclosure. Decisions on how best to house farm animals should be left to the family farmers, like me, who care for their animals every day. And you do not acknowledge the individual care that pigs get in such systems and the protection from predators, diseases and the aggression that pigs often exhibit toward each other in group housing.
