Turtles are the reptile everybody loves. Birders are always happy to see a turtle or tortoise, and there are times of the year when my social media feeds are sprinkled with photos of turtles beings removed from roads or crawling to land to lay eggs. Or that tortoises and terrapins are considered part of the turtle family.

Over the past couple of decades, at least two paramilitary groups in the Central African Republic have operated with government approval, as reported recently in an article on "armed environmentalism" in The Ecologist, a British magazine. In Nicaragua, the army patrols beaches to protect sea turtle eggs.

They need to learn by trial and error (often deadly to the chicks) where to safely place the nest, how to keep young in a tight group and hide them to avoid predators. A lone gosling or duckling is vulnerable to all sorts of predators like raptors, bass, herons, fox, snapping turtles and foxes (just to name a few).

Currently she does full time voluntary work for the local Australasian Wader Study Group, which aims to understand and analyze the factors determining shorebird numbers in a rapidly changing world. These do lay eggs on land and are (reasonably) mobile once they hit the beach. It seems like there is great diversity in this continent.

In Indonesia, Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpeckers can be ordered online – offers are posted in closed Facebook groups. In 2015, the price for this bird was 35 USD ( source ).
