Good news following an investigation of farm animal abuses by Mercy for Animals. Sometime soon, David Radlo of Radlo Foods says his sign in front of the former DeCoster Egg Farm will be coming down and all his business at the massive egg operation in Turner will come to an end. Grasshopper Buffet

This has obviously involved the active targeting of Moruga Grasshopper eggs and young, and an all-out attack involving chemical warfare. The whole reason I was exploring this area can be traced to a report of multiple sightings of small groups of the migratory Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Naturally, I had to investigate.

A bright flash of white caught my attention in this lilly-choked wetland Closer investigation revealed a stunning male Pheasant-tailed Jacana perched atop a female. When the female is ready to lay eggs, she will deposit a clutch of eggs in a nest built by each of her males and that is the end of her role in reproduction.

There had been good rains the previous year and as a result of that there were numerous family groups.

Stuck in the middle (of the AOU/COS meeting)

Handing out T-shirts at the registration desk with a summer intern from the Field Museum (one of the conference’s sponsoring groups) gave me a good feel for who was around and what ornithologists are like. Exhibitors ranged from book publishers to purveyors of telemetry equipment to local bird and wildlife groups.

Even to the author of the paper, who cautiously adds that “nest architecture is unlikely to be irrelevant to females, and its role deserves further investigation” (if swear words were allowed on 10,000 Birds, I would say that he is trying to cover his ass). It very effectively forms a small foraging group in this manner.
