This is the time of year when the Pied Oystercatchers breed and already three of the sixteen pairs along this stretch of beach have successfully laid eggs. The first pair to lay eggs this season have only a few more days of sitting and then they will be very busy guarding their chicks from predators.

Turtles are the reptile everybody loves. Birders are always happy to see a turtle or tortoise, and there are times of the year when my social media feeds are sprinkled with photos of turtles beings removed from roads or crawling to land to lay eggs. Or that tortoises and terrapins are considered part of the turtle family.

This was a gigantic project, way beyond just creating ways to protect cahow burrows from longtails (which Wingate also did, by creating baffles), and Gehrman takes us through many of Wingate’s struggles to bring back trees and mollusks and turtles and herons and fresh water pond life that no longer existed in Bermuda.

Why can’t a baby bird just hatch out of the egg and fly away, or at least, be able to fly a little and not require weeks of constant feeding and attention? Baby turtles and crocodiles are born as miniature versions of adults. Some birds do this a little. That is an oversimplification of what happens.

” I wonder if the rules of the European Song Contest could also be adapted, with the worst performers being turned into birds or maybe turtles. While I would not want to encourage anyone to put birds in cages, it is interesting to read about the experience of somebody breeding Black-headed Sibias in captivity.

Indeed, most cuckoo eggs are accepted by the babax ( source ), although a small proportion of hosts reject cuckoo eggs and often boast about this capability when having a few too many drinks. Ditto Oriental Turtle Dove. The Chinese Babax is a laughingthrush, as is Elliot’s Laughingthrush. Force of habit, I guess.

I had spent several holidays with my family in the USA in the 1980′s and then worked in Maine during the summer of 1985-beware the poison ivy and the snapping turtles! Read about them here but also get out and experience them. I then had a year in Florida – beware the alligators and hurricanes!
