In Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye”, there is a mention of a fictional story titled “The Secret Goldfish” Basically, it is about a boy who does not let anybody look at his goldfish because he bought it with his own money. Sometimes I feel a bit like this about winter birding on Shanghai’s Tianmashan hill. In my case, my secret is paid for with a little bit of birdseed (bought with my own money).

Over recent years we have learnt to not take being able to travel for granted. Thankfully we have plenty of places close to home that we can visit. There are still many roads closed after our recent floods. Although some roads have been reopened they can be closed at very short notice when we get more torrential rain. We enjoy cycling and walking and we can easily cycle on the flat bike path to Cable Beach , which is about 3.5kms from home.

In 2022, the 10,000 Birds eBird Collaborative submitted 1,837 checklists from 9 countries ( Australia , China , Costa Rica , Mexico , Saint Lucia , Serbia , Trinidad and Tobago , United Kingdom , and the United States ) and observed 1,273 species. The Collaborative life list increased to 4,140. New birds in 2022 were: 4,116: Short-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant (Trinidad and Tobago) 4,117: Aztec Rail (Mexico) 4,118: Scaled Antpitta (Costa Rica) 4,119: Steller’s Sea-Eagle (USA) 4,120: Lovely Cotinga
