Blakiston’s Fish Owl on Hokkaido

As if that wasn’t a small enough number already, one paper suggests splitting the species based on bioacoustic data and creating the Northern Fish Owl. As usual, habitat destruction is the major issue endangering this species. The owl is also at the center of conservation efforts, see here for details.

Just had my lifer Cinereous Vulture this morning

Before I was born, it used to be a rare breeding species in mountainous areas south of Belgrade, but became extinct after the 1960s due to intensive poisoning of wolves. There’s an eagle… a White-tailed Eagle , a relatively common and numerous breeding species of riparian forests along large water courses and fishponds.

It is a good place for South African birders, as several species are found here and nowhere else in South Africa, and it holds a small number of endemics that it shares with the Mozambique lowlands. But, from the existing data, the authors have drawn a different conclusion – there is no proof that the breeding population ever existed, that the south of Africa was beyond the species range and that that all observations were of vagrant individuals. During my lifetime, this species was rare in my native Serbia, too.
