When I emerged from my bedroom I learned what you, no doubt, as a regular reader have already deduced – it was the now-infamous “Eagle Steals a Baby” hoax video. I was pretty sure it was fake from the get-go, because who brings their baby to a golf course in Montreal to bait eagles?

Fortunately, we spotted all kinds of other tasty birds, including but certainly not limited to Crowned Eagle , Magpie Mannikin , Red-chested Cuckoo , and a spate of sunbirds and greenbuls. While the species sounds delicious, the nearly tailless bird presents a very bland appearance. Lemon-bellied Crombec … not as tasty as it sounds.

“Do you see the eagle?” Time enough, I suppose, for our newcomers to figure out that those aren’t eagles. although in real life Osprey are most likely to face off with thieving Bald Eagles and the occasional Raven , the Missoula Osprey’s avian opponents include the Idaho Falls Chukars and Orem Owlz.

On the other extreme you have outrageous stories like the supposed Thunderbird photograph of the America West, ambiguous winged creatures like Mothman and the Jersey Devil, and the impossible but incredibly persistent belief that (modern, extant) eagles can and will carry off small children. Come on — obviously Photoshopped!

We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family.

On Bush Bush, the main attraction is undoubtedly the pair of native primate species: Red Howler and (Trinidad) White-fronted Capuchin, the latter being critically endangered. Trees dotted with Channel-billed Toucans and Plumbeous Kites and a two-second topside view of a massive adult Ornate Hawk-Eagle can stir the imagination, though.
