Along with more orangutans and diminutive Common Pygmy Squirrels, we also found a massive cobra one day! Wallace’s Hawk Eagle was a lifer. The river is a stronghold of the endangered Storm’s Stork , a stunning member of the family, and I saw at least one every day I was there. A side tributary. What a bird!

There is a massive nest at the top of a tower beside the Sports Centre and a family of Monk Parakeets have taken up residence. There are White-bellied Sea Eagles in the area and it is likely their nest. It is also a good location for observing otters, squirrels and monitors. Common Sandpiper. Monk Parakeet.

As someone who has a spent a week this August on a family vacation in Seattle I think that I am eminently qualified to write a full blog post on how to bird Seattle. Bald Eagle Haliaeetus leucocephalus at Carkeek Park But Seattle has far more than just Discovery Park!

There were wild boars and monitors rustling through the leaves as well as the plantain squirrels that we had become so accustomed to. Asian Glossy Starlings , Javan Mynas , Spotted Doves , Common Flameback , Pacific Swallows , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Common Kingfisher , White-bellied Sea Eagle and Red Junglefowl were soon on the list.

This is not to say, however, that birders on holiday are, should they choose to travel with family, friends or other assorted loved ones, resigned to seeing nothing, or even nothing except the common stuff. I was thus able to pick an off-the-shelf ecotourism route and, having selected a company, customise it to my family’s needs.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far.

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. Young raptors like the above Bald Eagle chick are a different matter. That is probably one of the adults. Owls are a little different.
