After we took possession of an injured and weakened Golden Eagle from the vast desert area of eastern Utah, it became clear that the compound fracture of the tibiotarsus was the result of a steel-jaw trap. And Giant Otters are still common in the rivers around Karanambu Ranch, home of the late “otter lady”, Diane McTurck, who used to rehabilitate orphaned otters and whose family still runs the lodge. The Common Waxbill looks like it belongs in a pet shop rather than in the wild. In fact, this is probably a species that has substantially expanded its original range through the pet shop route and the resulting escapees. I was vaguely curious about the family name mousebird. A challenge for young birders, maybe.

We had learnt from signs over the days we had been in Singapore that they have a problem with people dumping unwanted pets and we presume this to be the case in the reservoir. Singapore is a great place to enjoy the woodpecker family. We were surprised to see a sign warning of sting rays in the reservoir! Banded Woodpecker.

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. I am only joking! Birds should be free.

It’s easy to choke it with food while you’re feeding it and chances are good that you’d raise the chick like a pet and you’d end up with an adult bird that doesn’t know what its predators are and seek humans for food and mating…aka an unreleasable bird. Never raise a wild goose or duckling yourself.
