Like many of the best NWRs for birding, Horicon NWR (and most of the WPAs I visited), were purchased with funds from the sale of Duck Stamps. of Horicon NWR was purchased with MBCF funds ( i.e., Duck Stamp funds). During the decade, I submitted 1,219 checklists and observed 555 bird species, all in the U.S. After an initial period when all species are new, the lifers begin to follow a pattern. After lazing in the heat I decided to visit the forest pools one last time, hoping for another sighting of Hartlaub’s Duck or White-bellied Kingfisher. I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. Isaac, my local guide was hesitantly following. Thainamu chose a snipe !
