Tamarind ( Tamarindus indica ) is a real odd duck of a fruit: it grows on a tree belonging to the family Fabaceae , making it a relative of peas, beans, and legumes. III (1812-13), by James Forbes (1749-1819), a prolific British artist and author who traveled widely in India during the colonial era.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt.

Occasionally it would duck as the camera shutter clicked, but apart from that it seemed quite unconcerned. They are placed in the Cisticolidae family which has representatives throughout the Old World and whose Christmas get-togethers also include the eponymous Cisticolas, the Apalises (Apali?)

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! Jon Fjeldså’s contributions include many of the ducks, yellow-finches, and many other families where his images of Birds of the High Andes could be used. This unfortunately happens with the large Tanager (Thraupidae) family here.

Impressively, India has more than 60 hotspots with more than 300 species, about 20 of those even with over 350 sp. Most of the India data comes from The 100 Best Birdwatching Sites in India India Some 6-8 hours north of New Delhi, Corbett National Park is India’s first and oldest tiger reserve.

I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. I was thrilled to see many of these gorgeous birds at the fort at Ranthambore NP, India. 5) White-winged Duck.

Long-tailed Duck – Clangula hyemalis. Wood Duck – Aix sponsa. Indian Spot-billed Duck – Anas poecilorhyncha.
