Get lucky, and you may see Canvasbacks , American and Least Bitterns, a Peregrine Falcon , a Northern Harrier or two, and Soras, as well as Chihuahuan Ravens and Cactus Wrens on the lake’s north shore. To the best of my knowledge, Ducks Unlimited is the one American organization working to protect the wetlands of Lago de Cuitzeo.

Peregrine Falcon ( Falco peregrinus ) at Delevan NWR (click on photos for full sized images). I’m sure most of you know that the Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species because of the use of organochlorine pesticides, especially DDT, during the 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s. Love those talons!

The many small ponds and waterways attract quite a few ducks, though presumably due to their China experience, they are extremely wary of people. Ferruginous Ducks are relatively rare here – a pity, given how attractive they are. Mandarin Ducks look a bit like they have just been stolen from a toy shop, at least the males.

There are a few, mostly confined to domestic or game birds that people may be familiar with at all stages of their lives – young pigeons are squabs, ducks are duckings, swans are cygnets, geese are gosling. They may be, but the names haven’t caught on.

As things appear to be returning to normal, The UK suffered its worst ever week for Covid infections. 2 Black-bellied Whistling-Duck – Dendrocygna autumnalis. 3 Fulvous Whistling-Duck – Dendrocygna bicolor. 11 Wood Duck – Aix sponsa. 19 Mexican Duck – Anas diazi.

The Management are still in Africa, suffering the buffering that comes with remoteness. Blue-billed Duck – Oxyura australis. Musk Duck – Biziura lobata. Red-necked Falcon – Falco chicquera. Falcated Duck – Mareca falcata. Yellow-billed Duck – Anas undulata. calle jocote.

Above the gardens a wheedling just fledged Gymnogene begged fro food from its long suffering parent. Red-knobbed Coots and Little Dabchicks patrolled the water’s surface, and every now and then a nervous flock or Yellow-billed Duck would land and then quickly leave. White Storks are magnificent birds.
