Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. Especially as we were at the time about to experience a rapidly advancing tropical storm. Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Striated Heron in breeding plumage – extra plumes and blue lores. Common Waxbills.

If you pay attention you realize who likes whom, who's a loner, where the nests are, and that, for instance, Muscovy ducks like those above have routines and rituals that involve seeking, pleasure, sun bathing, lots of grooming, and if they have a certain personality, a desire to connect with those around them, including humans.

Cats are slaves to no one, at least according to their reputation, which in my experience holds true. Mentally competent people, oddly enough, go around mutilating and killing deer and ducks and cougars, though, when doing so either is in season or some governmental body has decided their numbers need trimming.

Plus, I mean, it’s a giant chicken-looking thing that’s actually related to ducks… with that kind of identity crisis going on, what’s not to love? They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. See who won the contest here!
