We stop by one especially unruly nest with half a dozen round nests of Spanish Sparrows below – two are chatting on a wire right now – while at the first floor, inside the nest construction, the House Sparrows live; and, at the top floor, the White Storks are clapping their bills. This led to a correspondence with Spencer Fullerton Baird, then assistant secretary of the Smithsonian, the mentor of many naturalist/scientists of Ridgway’s generation, himself a disciple of John James Audubon, and, yes, the Baird of Baird’s Sparrow. Baird, Brewer, Cory, Bicknell, and Worthen all make appearances.

The first step was to download The Warbler Guide Song and Call Companion files, which are in MP3 format, from the Macaulay Library website to the iTunes program on my computer. The Companion files should be downloadable to other mobile devices, just be aware that the focus here is on using iTunes.

This meant that the app I had downloaded to my phone, Sasol eBirds of Southern Africa , produced by mydigitalearth.com, was the same as the book I had brought, which was not my intent.The app itself was excellent–easy to use, comprehensive, and relieving me of the burden of carrying a heavy book in my backpack.
