It’s a rough world for wildlife. Part of a wildlife rehabilitator’s job description should be a willingness to have your heart smashed to bits over and over again. The job of consoling me fell mostly to my dog. Merlin was huge and had a deep, savage voice, but was the gentlest dog I’ve ever known.

I asked a group of wildlife rehabilitators: “What are some of the Worst Bird Myths? Rehabbers are very responsive, although constantly living under the gun makes us sometimes vent about species that aren’t necessarily the ones in question. That’s where I learned that dog food and applesauce is the staple diet for all nestlings!”

The mother only returns once maybe twice a day to feed and some species of rabbits like the eastern Cottontail have their babies in the open rather than burrows. 2) If the rabbit is in danger such as from your cat or dog try to release it out of the perimeter. You need to get it to a wildlife rehabilitation center.

Bird brought in by a cat or dog. Even if you do not see an obvious wound, cat or dog saliva, which is full of nasty bacteria, can still get into a bird’s eyes/orifices and will eventually kill the bird; it will just die more slowly and painfully.
