As a breed, pit bulls have a bad rap. Like every dog they are vulnerable to homelessness and mistreatment. Michael Vick, whose unearthed gambling operation was found to not only force dogs to fight, but also kill under-performing dogs in twisted ways, is only one story in a mass of untold stories.

No dog is happier to be rescued. My human kept me in an enclosed porch because, let’s face it, I was crawling with fleas and pretty filthy. She put a dog bed outside with some food and water, and I’d see her checking on me about every five minutes. We dogs are wired by nature to be humans’ companions.

On February 17th they rescued 26 Pit Bulls near Sandersville, Georgia. The dogs had been left to starve, no food, water or even shelter from freezing temperatures. Sadly, there were also 27 dead dogs found on the property. It is believed that the dogs were part of a dog fighting ring.

When I agreed to read and review Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's THE DOG WHO COULDN'T STOP LOVING (Harper 2010), the regal Charles Hobson Booger, III was still with us. He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. And the crying would never stop.

One day while I was volunteering I met a little pit bull puppy who was recovering from a spaying. I had a couple of dogs when I was a kid, but I mostly grew up with cats. There are also many "feral" and "food-aggressive" personality types in humans, but we don't put them down.) But I'm no dog expert.

What if, instead of hanging and drowning dogs, Sick Vick were involved in hanging and drowning people? Because he killed humans and only humans matter in this world remember? Tags: pit bull Michael Vick sick. Would we be in such a hurry to forgive and forget? Perhaps he just needed a mentor or, even better, a hug!

This is Sam, an American Pit Bull Terrier that was rescued from a life of dogfighting. He was rescued by the Humane Society of the United States, and has since earned the nickname “Bulletproof Sam”! The shirts this week benefit the Humane Society of the United States, and feature a message we love!
