The individual I am pictured holding ( above ) was a friendly bird that (rather like a dog) seemed happy to be handled.

Cars whiz past the nesting sites, mere feet from where the seabirds incubate their eggs and where their chicks will inevitably explore. And yet, on the bridge the birds are relatively protected from the dogs, beach-goers, and predators that frequent their traditional habitats along dunes.

It’s during these months when I cringe anytime there’s a dog on the beach (though usually dogs aren’t allowed at all), for fear it might go after a fuzzy chick or adult sitting on eggs. The magnificent, adorable, and dangerous breeding season for both shorebirds and seabirds along the Florida Panhandle.

Colorful bills and heads seem quite popular among Letaba’s bird species – see the African Jacana (blue and black) … … the Striated Heron (yellow and blue) … … and the Yellow-billed Stork (yellow and red). The Latin species name vermiculatus (worm-like) refers to the markings on the upperparts.

In Florida, the Least Tern is a state-designated threatened species; the interior populations are federally endangered. It’s mid-April, and soon they will begin laying eggs. Support beach and dune preservation – By protecting the dune ecosystems, we will protect critical nesting habitats for nesting terns.
