I say unceremoniously – but I am using the human metric by which we decide what makes noise and what doesn’t. Did the Black-bellied Whistling Duck represent his family, “showing face” as we say here in the Caribbean? Without so much as a splash, it slipped into the water. A moment of silence for the departed.

Thank you, goddess of birding luck and text group people).* It also summarizes the vagrancy status of every bird family in the whole wide world, which makes it fun to read as well as superbly educational. The Family Accounts are the fun part of the book. Next time, I’ll know why.

Baby birds are cuteness personified, possibly even more so than other baby animals, including human babies, and pose interesting questions of survival and development. Baby birds may be separated from the nest and their parents because of natural occurrences (violent weather, floods) or unknowing human interference or predators.

It’s also about human-owl interaction on an individual level and a wider sociocultural level, and ultimately how we can use all this for habitat and bird conservation. The species are taxonomically divided into two families: Tytonidae, Barn-Owls, and Strigidae, Owls, encompassed in one order, Strigiformes.

Appendix A lists “Rare Migrants and Vagrants,” 81 species, including birds for which there are no documented records, but which are listed in the literature or eBird. Checklist for Belize lists 622 species in 76 families, of which 104 are rare or accidental and four introduced. Fantasy is the key word here.

If you had your choice of one bird family to pursue, to seek out and observe and photograph and kvell over, which one would you choose? A passion for one bird family is also very useful. I’m surprised that the book doesn’t include images reflecting some of the hummingbird and human history Dunn writes about in such detail.

It’s relatively easy to classify birds into family groups based on physical characteristics. It’s very hard to organize the many ways in which human beings relate to avian beings into comprehensible text. We view them as our enemies when they eat our crops and as an extension of our family when we see them at our feeders.
