He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. In my opinion, the crux of the question touches on what is “humane.” Here is my opinion.

Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. And the absurdity is in the reality that the author and the featured person who kills sentient nonhumans for a living, think they're onto something. It’s how we treat humans, too. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

The definition of the word HUNT is “to chase or search for game or other wild animals for the purpose of catching or killing.” ” The definition of the word CONSERVATION is “the act or an instance of conserving or keeping from change, loss, or injury.” Why is this happening?

Kudos to eBird for describing the bird as an “energetic little bird with a tennis ball body and a long tail” Another definite entry into this guide will be the Rufous-faced Warbler. For example, this paper points out that migrating Bramblings prefer to feed in a habitat in which they are less likely to get killed.

We are not people who are interested in discussing animal rights, as in, the right of sentient nonhumans to not be used by humans for potential profit, for sport or for lunch. Maybe "humane" is already on its way out for the folks trying to convince themselves and others that humane killing isn't an oxymoron.

People in South Florida are still in an uproar over the mutilation and slaughter of 19 house cats (allegedly) by 18-year old Tyler Weinman, who was declared mentally competent and not a danger to himself or others (!). The four counts of burglary he is being charged with carry a heftier sentence than the animal killing.

Stephanie's post about " The Compassionate Hypocrite " on Saturday reminded me of what Catherine Friend and other " compassionate carnivores " are doing in addition to twisting the definition of compassionate beyond recognition. Interesting definitions of betray include: 2. It's cruel. There's no "compassion" in the process.
