Memorable encounters with Mammals Part II It’s generally reckoned that there are more deer in Britain today than there were in the Middle Ages, a fact that is almost certainly true. Fallow have been present in Britain for many hundreds of years, but Sika, Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer are all relatively recent arrivals.

I'm pretty sure it was a deer or goat that was common knowledge about its existence but never saw in real life. It opened its flaps on its chest to show white fur underneath that most of us assumed was just there and not hidden under two folds of skin. I saw that one person in the comments said that the fur smells of popcorn.

Another danger to the species comes from lead poisoning as they eat the carcasses of deer killed by hunters ( source ). But marrying a widow and thus getting access to scientific information was not the only remarkable event in his life.

Regarding deer: The harm caused by overcrowding of deer herds on limited available lands, to both the deer and humans, is well documented in the scientific literature, which also documents the fact that controlled hunting is not only the most cost effective way to deal with the problem, but the only really effective way as well.

Useful species were ones you could eat, or hunt, or preferably both, which is why New Zealand had several species of deer, the alpine goat-antelopes known as the Chamois and the Himalayan Tahr introduced. Brush-tailed Possums were brought from Australia to help start a fur industry.

People also say that hyraxes are elephants, but they are so distant in their relationship that it is little different than saying that deer are a type of pronghorn antelope. You’ll hear people tell you that birds are dinosaurs, and that is supposed to blow you away and make you go all gaga about birds and evolution.

He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. I wondered what in the world he’d brought back and discovered the wet ball of fur was a very young bunny. He often tried to approach them as if they were friends.
