Despite, or maybe because of the active human intervention, quite a few species can be seen in a couple hours in the morning. (I I averaged forty species on my visits and I imagine that if my ear was more attuned to the chip notes of southern California birds I could come up with more.) Have you had a cool Coyote encounter?

Osborn, a passionate field biologist who participates to the core of her being three re-introduction projects aimed at saving three very different, endangered species: Peregrine Falcon, Hawaiian Crow (‘Alala)*, and California Condor. Mauricio and Melba picked me up and if it weren’t for the Coyote we saw on the way it would have taken us 5 minutes to reach Chipinque Parque Ecologico. Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show. Now it took 6.

If you haven’t yet embraced the theory or practice of birthday birds, I recommend that, next time your special day rolls around, you make it a point to pursue a seasonally appropriate species you don’t regularly see. Coyote as it stayed just out of acceptable camera-range in Irvine Regional Park. How about you?

I new him because we enlisted his Dryfus Lion and one of his tigers to carry out experiments with bones (this is something archaeologists do). Dogs are similarly dispersed across size ranges, with Foxes, Coyotes, and Wolves taking prey across different parts of the size range. Plus, Coyotes eat Cats. That was one of his cats.

Great Gray Owl taking the bait (photo by Nathalie Fortier) At the end of the experience, she posted her photographs clearly stating that the bird was baited, and leaving the mouse in most photos. One wouldn’t tether a rabbit out to get a shot of a fox or a coyote, or is that somehow different?

My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. We got at least three sub-species but the highlight was a Wilson’s Snipe we flushed.
