Viral DNA was used to introduce a gene for a green fluorescent protein into monkeys, creating a new line of "glow-in-the-dark" transgenic primates for drug research work. You can argue that anything is good for humanity in the short run, until it gets into the wrong hands in the long run. The ethical questions are obvious.

We know that the human mind has capacities that are not common in other animals. For example, humans have “Theory of Mind” which is not a theory in the scientific sense, but rather, a capacity whereby we have an internal theory of what is going on in other people’s minds. But that’s another story. Here’s the idea. Just eat the food.

I was pretty sure it was fake from the get-go, because who brings their baby to a golf course in Montreal to bait eagles? Joking aside, the instant viral popularity of this video seems to me to be speaking to some deep-rooted fears in the human psyche. Everyone knows you bait eagles with babies in Alpine meadows, DUH.

There is a profound difference between what Sea Shepherd does and what the Animal Liberation Front does, but there are also similarities, and those similarities increase in number if a direct action by the ALF (or anyone else) is an open rescue and therefore a direct defense of sentient nonhumans being attacked by humans.

I want to talk about this research but if you really want to know more about it, don’t rely on me; one of the co-authors of this important paper is Darren Naish, who happens to be a stupendous blogger, and he has written the research up here. So, for example, humans are apes. The point is, of course, that whales are not cows.

She supports medical research on animals. One scene has the author entering the part of the hospital where the research animals are. This woman, who I now mentally call "THE VIVISECTOR," defended medical research. The descriptions of the research subjects are very roundabout, but still horrific to me. Which surprised me.
