In Costa Rica, October is our May. While birders up north are pishing up sparrows, digging the Autumn weekend at Cape May, or twitching vagrants, we are busy with kingbird flocks during our height of migration. Some of the Birding Club at Selva Bananito. Some were feeding on the ground. Black Swift!

Carara National Park isn’t just any old protected area. It’s one of the top birding hotspots in Costa Rica and Central America. Raptors : Hawks and their like are not all that common in Costa Rica. Rufous-tailed Jacamar : Fairly common in many areas of Costa Rica, including Carara.

When looking for birds in Costa Rica, the Central Valley isn’t the first place that comes to mind. In the erstwhile sanctuary, common species like Red-billed Pigeon , Blue-black Grassquit , and Rufous-collared Sparrow abound. I worry because no protection is given to such supposed “trash” habitats.

My first tropical birding trip was to Costa Rica when I was 8 and the Jabiru was at the top of my list even then, but sadly none were encountered. It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day!
