Take that same stroll in southern Brazil or other places and extinction is acres of burned rainforest, a walk through plastic decorated neighborhoods devoid of insects, massive forest fires, die-offs of animals, and millions of shellfish being cooked alive , in situ. Which species are endangered? Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata).

The day started out with some typical monsoon-season cloudiness, so my first photos suffered a bit from low lighting. Black-chested Sparrow is one of Paso Ancho’s flagship species. As I learned this week, locals cook the unripe fruit into meat dishes, and eat the ripe fruit raw… as do birds! A Golden Vireo showed up.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. The first to cruise past in a hurry were the stunning Cook’s Petrels. It is also restricted as a breeder to the north of North Island.

Sometimes I just want to hug eBird, or more specifically, whoever writes the short species descriptions (even though I am not the typical hugging kind of person, trust me on this). There are about 50 different species of flowerpeckers globally. If these are taken off, the species looks just like Clark Kent. “Dull, me?

While in Mexico, up on the roof of a casa (where I was cooking something up) I saw a murmeration! The birds were too far away to identify, and I know more than one species does this, but if I had to guess they were starlings. If half the Warblers go extinct, that would be a lot of species but you’d still pretty much have Warbler DNA.
