Go to Hispaniola and a birder has the pleasure of admiring two species of tody for the price of one, checking out the odd, mono familiar Palmchat , and listening to the parrotish calls of the White-necked Crow. If the avian realm had self-conscious, talking ambassadors, “spokebirds”, which species would partake in birding conferences? Would Barred Owls chuckle and admit that, for the record, “No, we really aren’t saying ‘Who cooks for you’?” Ditto for the Kea. Maybe except for the gulls.

But a vast number of species DO exhibit dazzling displays of color. And the ways in which these two fundamental ingredients are added to the color cooking pot are what produces the final colors that we see. This might explain why many predominantly-white bird species have entirely black or black-tipped feathers in their wings.

Along that stretch, we enjoyed Fork-tailed Flycatchers and other species in the open fields and marshes including Harriss’s Hawk , the local Nicaraguan Seed-Finch , and, best of all, a pair of normally sneaky and secretive Yellow-breasted Crakes walking in the open through a grassy marsh!

Picking up a bargain copy of the latest edition of the Parrots of the World by Joseph Forshaw. Joseph has forgotten more than I will ever know when it comes to parrots. In addition to this tight clustering of related parakeets, the genus also had two species in the far-flung Society Islands (now in French Polynesia).
