So, I anxiously followed the “Flock to Marion 2022” Facebook group in anticipation for open cabins to come up for sale. In 1776, James Cook sailed past the islands due to charts and navigation of du Fresne’s second in command, Julien Crozet. I waited…and waited…and waited. Which makes it a haven for seabirds….and and seabirders.

The story says millions of animals may have died.

Environmental groups are opposed, because it is perceived as a wedge to try and open up the forests to more economic exploitation, and there are concerns about the damage such selective timber recovery might cause. It is passing through a one time bill to allow this, well, windfall to be partly used. And not everyone is happy about this.

Chicago is a good place for birds: on eBird, Cook County, Illinois has nearly 400 species and more than 275,000 checklists. Why are birds a good proxy for broader human-wildlife interactions? One group is trying to make a better list of which species of birds to pretend to be doing something about vis-a-vis imminent extinction using a unique approach: Identifying the most genetically unique species.
