Though they are getting harder to find, Paul Matschie named the cross-river gorilla a new species in 1904. These gorillas live in groups of two to twenty and are extremely gregarious animals. A dominant male serves as the group leader. These gorillas have black or brownish-gray fur.

Mountain Gorilla Ranger Slain in the Congo

Protecting mountain gorillas in the Congo is dangerous work. Mai Mai rebels are described as community-based militia groups frequently involved in banditry. Tags: virunga war congo gorillas endangered species. Just last week, a 33-year-old ranger was killed by Mai Mai rebels. Here is a brief Youtube video of him.
