It was a pelagic trip organized by See Life Paulagics and it was a pretty memorable trip with five species of shearwater, Leach’s Storm-Petrels , Wilson’s Storm-Petrels , a variety of dolphins, some sharks, and a variety of other sea life. Three South Polar Skuas at once! Awesome! ….

The chapter “Horseshoe Crabs” illustrates why this is THE keystone species of the Delaware Bay. Once used as fertilizer, the crabs are now harvested as bait for common whelk and bled for an extract used in medical research. Most articles on the Delaware Bay focus on horseshoe crabs and Red Knots.

Collectively, they’re referred to as the Herring Gull complex. Among these white-headed/dark-winged gulls formerly lumped into the genus Larus , there were 18+ recognized species the last time I checked, sharing similarities that make telling them apart for the amateur birdwatcher very difficult. Even the Latin species name soror (“sister”) indicates the similarity to another pitta species (blue-naped). The eBird description of the Small Niltava starts with the surprisingly dull statement that “size distinguishes this species from other niltavas” Who would have thought.
