A Marabou Stork arriving at its roost tree, Serengeti, Tanzania by Adam Riley We’ll start off with the largest and ugliest of them all (measuring up to 60in (152cm) in height, a weight of 20 lb (9 kg) and a wingspan of up to 12ft), the Marabou Stork. They are often found roosting in small groups along the edges of lakes and riverine sandbars.

This attractive (for a lark anyway) species is restricted to the dry savannah Somali-Maasai biome of north-east Africa (northern Tanzania, Kenya, southern Ethiopia and Somalia). They usually occur in pairs or small groups but can gather in the thousands when conditions are right – for example when Etosha Pan in Namibia floods.

Delegorgue’s main ornithological contribution was collecting Delegorgue’s Pigeon in the now vanished forests of Durban, but besides this he had little significant input. Wahlberg travelled even more extensively and amassed a huge bird collection. Woodward’s Barbet belongs to a group of barbets known as Green Barbets.

I enjoy collecting children’s books about birds and nature that I come across in the expected (book stores) and unexpected (academic library conference reports) places. The targeted age group is 6 to 11 years. My favorite was the Greater Flamingo in Tanzania (Pinkest bird!). It really isn’t. This series by Carol L.

This time it is the Old World that has misnamed a group of birds, or in fact several groups. Once upon a time, when I started birding, this great family included a wide range of species collectively known as the robins and chats. It all comes back to a split in one of the great bird families, the Turdidae, or thrushes.
