After my post about collecting two weeks ago I received a bit of feedback, some positive, some negative, and I’ve been mulling it over with the intention of writing about some of the issues that could be considered the root cause of the disagreement. You see, the bird was collected for scientific study. Or how gracefully it flew?

I put it in a small box for several hours, where it appeared to recover, but studies have shown that internal injuries from a strike usually kill the bird. Dead birds are a part of the life of a birder, a feeder of birds, and of bird science. ©2012 Donna L. And I don’t think that will be many people.

It very effectively forms a small foraging group in this manner. The species is classified as Near Threatened for all the usual depressing reasons – pollution, drainage, hunting, and the collection of eggs and nestlings ( source ). I am sure one could make a very boring movie based on the events described in this paper.

What the Owl Knows: The New Science of the World’s Most Enigmatic Birds is a joyous, fascinating read. They are also hunted.

Delegorgue’s main ornithological contribution was collecting Delegorgue’s Pigeon in the now vanished forests of Durban, but besides this he had little significant input. Wahlberg travelled even more extensively and amassed a huge bird collection. Woodward’s Barbet belongs to a group of barbets known as Green Barbets.

Christian Cooper comes on screen about two-and-a-half minutes into The Central Park Effect , appreciating a Prothonotary Warbler at ‘the Point’ while telephoning a friend with the news (this is pre-text group), a nice hint of the collegial networks that underlie Central Park birding. It was the same day George Floyd was killed.

Collectively, they’re referred to as the Herring Gull complex. To recap however, grouping them by their slight variation in body size between 53 and 67cm in length (21 to 26in): The biggest two are Yellow-legged and Caspian gulls, distinguishable by the presence or absence of brightly-colored (yellow) legs.
