Breezy Point, the westernmost tip of the barrier islands that protect Long Island’s south shore, is also the southwestern most portion of Queens and one of my favorite locations to look for birds. It was my favorite type of wildlife watching, a real spectacle. Sometimes, though, there wasn’t much close to the jetty at all.

Even our local Greater Sage Grouse , which now are receiving a huge effort at habitat protection, and restoration, were just those really cool birds out in the desert. The State of Oregon, in 1975 listed the bird as Threatened, and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife reaffirmed that status in 1989 under the Oregon Endangered Species Act.

Urban parks in downtown historic squares, a riverfront with cobblestone streets, and multiple wildlife refuges and state parks called like the Sirens. The students had a good laugh on the following Monday when their teacher came to class with a wicked, lobster-hued sunburn. The public outcry was enormous and effective!
