Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. While it is listed as Least Concern, it is rare in China – the range map in the HBW barely touches Chinese territory.

Some of the more conservative Light-vented Bulbuls in my compound were trying to make the wearing of a tie mandatory for the species. Anyway, back to the somewhat less interesting birdlife within my prison-compound. A pair of White-rumped Munias has built a nest inside the compound, mostly for my benefit. So, I took these photos for them.

It is a fascinating world of swampy forests of willow and poplar, inhabited by Black Storks , White-tailed Eagles , Eastern Olivaceous and Icterine Warblers (above), among more than 200 other species. Locations, dates, species and numbers, right? Among the common species, Nagy mentions the Corn Crake.

Birding beyond Brisbane

At high tide the shorebirds have a protection wall where they can roost on green lawn and feel safe. We did have the good fortune of finding an individually marked Bar-tailed Godwit that was marked in Yalu Jiang Nature Reserve in China last April 15th and was last seen there on May 11th 2012.
