Kerkini: Europe’s Best Bird Lake?

Few suitable nesting trees still survive today When I visited Kerkini last month, the water was high as high as I have ever seen it, though the number of ducks and geese was low, as is usual. There were a few Mallard, and the odd Ferruginous Duck, along with Greylag Geese and Mute Swans. A mass feeding frenzy.

Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side. Hippo and attending Cattle Egret. It’s even possible to count exactly the same bird for both country’s lists. Yellow-billed Stork.

What is killing birds at Karla Lake (Greece)?

At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing. Common Kestrels could be seen, too, but were outnumbered by their more gregarious threatened cousins. This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans.

Winter Mission

A vast congregation of Bald Eagles kept watch over a herd of cattle about to calve, up to seven in a single tree — no doubt awaiting delicious placentas. We concluded the days by unsuccessfully scanning a golf course flock of Canada Geese for Cackling Geese , then returned to Missoula chilly but triumphant.

Birding around Kununurra

One gate had Glossy Ibis, Pied Heron, White-faced Heron, Little Pied Cormorant and Cattle Egrets all roosting together. The Shining Flycatcher was coming down to the water in exactly the same area as last year and the Little Black Cormorants were diving for fish. At many of the sluice gates there were good varieties of birds roosting.

En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese. Then he pointed out a Least Tern that came in to hunt for fish on the pond as if I would be assuaged with another bird that has “Least” in its name! Only one cuckoo? We never even got out of the car!
