I saw lots of different kinds of woodpeckers this weekend, but that big, honking Pileated always wins out over the others for Best Bird honors. The Pantanal hosts a mosaic of forest islands and riverside forest which is home to an interesting assemblage of regional endemics such as Mato Grosso Antbird , White-lored Spinetail , and Pale-crested Woodpecker. The incredible lighting at dawn in the Pantanal is an experience in of itself. I must mention one thing.

This land has gone through extensive ecosystem destruction from farming cattle and soybeans. The first views of a Brown Cachalote made up for all of the dust sucking experience. My first heat thumping experience came when I saw the Crested Hornero. My third crested bird-thumping experience was the Red-crested Cardinal.

’ They are challenging to find, frustrating to photograph, and the antbird experience often includes heat and humidity, mud and bugs. Favorite Woodpecker: This is a toughie. It was one of those magic experiences when you are so absorbed you forget you have a camera.
