In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans.

Oh, and maybe humans need to be a bit less destructive to your habitat, too. According to the HBW, “only female incubates and cares for young … [while] males leave during [the] incubation period” Right on, sharpies! No wonder that Oriental Pratincoles generally encourage humans to eat more beef.

One study in Korea found that 37% of injuries and deaths were caused by predation by natural enemies, another 37% (a worryingly high number) by window strikes, 10% by traffic accidents, 7% each by flooding and dehydration, and 3% by human disturbance. I hope he is right. ” Good point, I think.

According to the HBW, when breeding, male birds do most of the incubation and parenting while females often leave the nest up to one week before the eggs hatch. According to Couzens, after laying the eggs, females sometimes immediately abandon their first mate and pair up with another male. But maybe that is actually a good thing.

Being a bit older myself now, I have to point out that young human males usually do not look that good, at least to me. Then, I was not sure whether this was the right thing to do. Cattle Egrets have perfected that smudgy look. A juvenile male. The real thing: an adult male. A happier shrike. But do we really care?

Of the estimated 500 million cattle in India, only 4% were destined for consumption by humans as meat. Out of all sights of the city, from Ghandi’s Sabarmati Ashram to Adalaj Stepwell and from Sidi Saiyyed Mosque to Bhadra Fort, these weird tourists want to go to a dead cattle dumping site?? It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. I imagined walking right up to them. They did flush eventually, but not because of humans. American Avocets.
