Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side. Hippo and attending Cattle Egret. It’s even possible to count exactly the same bird for both country’s lists. Yellow-billed Stork.

In the last ten years, Cattle Egrets have bred again, on and off, but for the first time since 1870s. Imperial and Booted are the rarest eagles in the country, the first with only one heavily guarded pair left. White-tailed Eagles become more visible and locally more numerous, joined by rare, yet regular Greater Spotted Eagles.

Before we reached the plains there was roadkill and we observed three Wedge-tailed Eagles in a tree. It is not unusual to see Wedge-tailed Eagles around Broome, but rarely three all together. You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies. Quite often there are Australian Pelicans , Brolga and Royal Spoonbills present and the egret species often include Great Egret , Intermediate Egret , Little Egret and Cattle Egret. A vast congregation of Bald Eagles kept watch over a herd of cattle about to calve, up to seven in a single tree — no doubt awaiting delicious placentas. We concluded the days by unsuccessfully scanning a golf course flock of Canada Geese for Cackling Geese , then returned to Missoula chilly but triumphant.
