A kestrel in the rain

In the Spring, the reserve is alive with nesting Redshanks , Skylarks , and displaying Lapwings , while Marsh Harriers cruise the reed beds looking for food for their young, and Brown Hares raise their young safe from men with dogs. It is a windy place at the best of times.

Only for Dogs and Birders – Kalamas Delta, Greece

I am checking the grass for any flash of white and soon my suspicion is confirmed: Cattle Egrets (cover photo)! It is getting really hot now, 30oC and I am in a car in the open, without any shade… any shade big enough for a man – trackside bushes offer bits of shade large enough for a dog to lie down.

The return of the Old Man

The individual I am pictured holding ( above ) was a friendly bird that (rather like a dog) seemed happy to be handled. Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience.

My post last week where I defended game hunting as a conservation tool has, unaccountably, encountered a certain amount of push back. Who would have thought that a post defending hunting game in general would have not been universally acclaimed? I will address two of them in the new year, namely, “Is hunting moral at all?”
